This past week my family and I went to the Henry Doorly Zoo. My mom had never been there before in her 50+ years of living in Nebraska!! We also had visitor’s staying with us from Denmark and they really wanted to visit the zoo because Trip Advisor had highly recommended it.
I’ve personally been to the zoo many times and I would like to point out some tips to anyone who may be thinking about a visit.
Get there as early as possible. We were there at 9am when they opened. Our first stop was the Aquarium because we were waiting on the rest of our party to get there. I have never been able to enjoy the penguins by myself! There was absolutely nobody else in there!!! Side note, the Aquarium is probably a place you should visit in the afternoon is you are visiting during the summer months. It’s an air conditioned building!
Go on a weekday. By mid morning the crowds were starting to pick up but it was still very tolerable. We were able to see everything we wanted to up close!
Wear comfortable shoes. We walked over 6.5 miles the day we visited!
As you’re entering the zoo I would first go to the Desert Dome. Desert equals it’s warm in there! Next after finishing there you can either head over to the Jungle or start to all the outdoor attractions such as the Giraffe’s and Elephants. Make sure to stop by the birthing and family area’s for each animal. There is a baby giraffe right now! (July 2019) Just make sure to head to the right side of the zoo first. Going that way it’s all downhill. If you go the left you’ll be walking uphill by the Elephants and Giraffe’s
Bring your own rolling cooler or backpack cooler. The prices of food are pretty expensive. We brought a rolling cooler and it wasn’t too much trouble lugging it around. We all just took turns. At the bottom of the hill past the elephants you will find a shaded eating area and they also serve food. Coleman 42-Can Soft Cooler with Removable Liner & Wheels
Take the elevator. After you’ve done all the outdoor viewing and stopped to see the gorilla’s (there is a baby here too) and monkey’s, make sure to take the elevator. There is a terrible steep hill over where the big cats are located. After using the elevator now would be the perfect time to head over to the aquarium to cool off!
Buy Tickets online. I about forgot to mention this, but if you buy them online you can skip straight to entering the zoo!
I hope these tips will help you have an exceptional zoo trip. My family loves going to this zoo. It is well maintained and for the most part they have done a great job providing them a natural habitat.
