Top 10 things to do: Henry Doorly Zoo

Top 10:  Henry Doorly Zoo

Summer vacation season is upon us and one of my family’s top places to visit is the Henry Doorly Zoo in Omaha, NE.  The zoo is rated one of the top zoos in the nation.  The animals are well taken care of, and the staff is very knowledgeable about the animals.  Here is a list of 10 must see exhibits at the zoo!

#1– Hubbard Gorilla Valley   The Gorillas are an amazing species to watch.  During certain hours they are very active and interact with the public.

#2 – Scott Aquarium   The Aquarium building is a large display of various sea life.  You start off by being able to touch star fish and are soon ushered in to see penguins!!  The 70ft shark tunnel brings you face to face with large sting rays that always seem to be smiling, giant turtles and of course sharks!

#3 – Lied Jungle   The Jungle is an actual jungle atmosphere with monkeys, birds, hippos, and various other animals living all under one roof.  The open concept lets visitors enjoy animals in a more natural setting.

#4 – Desert Dome   Don’t be offended by the smell once you step inside this building.  Your nose will quickly adjust.  Much like the Jungle, the Dome portion of the exhibit is an open atmosphere.  Once you head downstairs to the swamp portion make sure to find the albino alligator!

#5 – Elephant and Giraffe’s   In the recent years, these areas are a new addition to the zoo.  Recently the zoo was able to acquire 5 new elephants and welcomed a baby giraffe!

#6 – Children’s Adventure Trails   This is also a new addition to the zoo.  Your children probably won’t want to leave this area!

#7 – Take the Train   The zoo is extremely large with many hills.  The train will take you all around the zoo with a couple of drop off and pick up points to help little legs that may be getting tired.

#8 – Stingray Beach   Stingray Beach is another new activity that the kids will love.  It’s located by the Adventure trails.

#9 – Butterfly and Insect Pavilion   If you’re not afraid of flying objects landing on you then this is a great place to see.  There are many species with many beautiful color patterns.

#10 – Imax Theater   Step inside the theater and enjoy a movie on the big screen.  This would also be a great place to relax and cool off plus the 3D movies are neat!

If you are you’re family are taking a summer trip I encourage you to stop by the Henry Doorly Zoo in Omaha.  Pack a sack lunch and find a spot and enjoy the views. You can easily spend 2 days here.
